Antrim Park - Micro Grid

Project Brief

Sam Loughridge Dairy, managing a 300-head herd, was facing significant power supply challenges that were affecting the farm’s operations.

The farm’s existing 3-phase power system was proving inefficient, resulting in inconsistent energy supply and costly energy bills.

This inefficiency not only impacted operational reliability but also contributed to lower productivity and diminished bottom-line profits.

Faced with these issues, the client sought a more reliable, cost-effective energy solution to improve efficiency, reduce expenses, and enhance overall farm performance.

Solution

Solar & Battery Storage

Installation of a 59.2 kWp solar power system paired with a 58 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a 40kVA inverter charger. This setup aimed to maximise the use of solar energy and ensure energy availability even during non-sunny periods.

REDEI Battery Cabinet

Using the REDEI 4-door Avantess Cabinet for optimised energy storage and management.

Hybrid Grid Connection

The farm’s system was designed to be hybrid grid-connected, ensuring a seamless blend of solar energy utilisation with grid energy, enhancing reliability and efficiency.

Benefits

The project brought significant advantages to Sam Loughridge Dairy, delivering a range of benefits that transformed the farm’s energy management.

These improvements included enhanced sustainability, with a more reliable and efficient energy supply, ensuring higher-quality power on demand.

The farm also saw important equipment upgrades that optimised operations, leading to lower energy costs.

Overall, the project not only improved the farm’s bottom line but also positioned Sam Loughridge Dairy for long-term energy resilience and operational efficiency.

Secured Energy Supply

Reliable and sustainable energy supply, really crucial for the continuous operation of a dairy farm.

High Renewable Energy Load

54% of the farms energy load is being met by renewable energy sources, significantly reducing the reliance on grid energy.

Cost Savings

50% savings in annual energy bills, considerably lowering operational costs and improving financial stability.

Self-Sustainability

Taken significant steps towards becoming self-sustainable.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Working towards the industry standard for carbon reduction.

Conclusion

Sam Loughridge Dairy and REDEI have demonstrated the powerful operational and sustainability benefits of investing in renewable energy micro growth infrastructure.

The Antrim Park project at Sam Loughridge Dairy stands as a compelling example of how renewable energy solutions can revolutionize the agricultural sector, particularly dairy farming.

By addressing critical challenges like high energy bills and inefficient power systems, the project significantly enhanced the farm’s operational efficiency while positioning Sam Loughridge Dairy as a leader in sustainable farming practices.

This case study highlights the potential of solar power and battery storage systems to deliver reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly energy solutions for the agricultural industry. The project not only boosted productivity but also reduced operating costs, setting a benchmark for the future of energy management in farming.
