Project Brief

Jelbart Dairy, a leading 1000-cow rotary farm located near Leongatha in Gippsland, has been contending with serious energy consumption and supply challenges.

Managed by Tim Jelbart, the farm faced an annual energy expenditure of around $60,000, with 54% of the costs incurred during peak tariff periods.

This elevated expense, coupled with a power demand that peaked at 70kVA, placed considerable strain on the farm’s energy infrastructure.

The farm’s Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) supply transformer, with a limited capacity of 40kVA, was unable to meet the high power demand efficiently, leading to operational inefficiencies.

These challenges highlighted the pressing need for a strategic energy management solution to optimise power usage, reduce costs, and enhance the farm’s overall energy resilience.

Solution

Solar and Battery Storage

Installation of a 90 kWp solar panel system and an 80 kWh REDEI Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Energy StorageSystem (BESS), housed in a locally assembled, airconditioned 20Ft custom container. This setup was designed to meet the dairy farm’s complete energy requirements.

Innovative Battery Charger

Integration of Redei’s patented 40k VA battery charger with the grid to cover any power shortfall that the solar panels and battery system could not provide, primarily during off-peak night hours.

Capacity Enhancement

The system effectively increased the farm’s power supply capacity to 130 kVA, circumventing the need for expensive upgrades to the grid network.

The financial benefits are equally striking. Jelbart Dairy is on track to achieve a five-year system payback period, as predicted during the initial design studies, with immediate reductions in energy costs already being realised.

In addition, the farm has now secured energy resilience, with the REDEI system continuing to function during grid outages caused by storms, bushfires, or maintenance work.

With this enhanced capacity, Tim can confidently support the farm’s growing energy demands, enabling future expansion to meet increasing production needs. As farms like Jelbart must scale operations to remain competitive and profitable, this renewable energy solution provides the foundation for long-term sustainability and growth.
